Beskidy Zachodnie w granicach przyjętych w niniejszej pracy obejmują 7 mezoregionów (Beskid Śląski, Mały, Wysoki, Makowski i Wyspowy, Gorce i Kotlinę Żywiecką) i zajmują powierzchnię ok. 4780 km2. Beskidy Zachodnie rozciągają się w kierunku wschód-zachód na odcinku ok. 142 km, natomiast na odcinku północ-południe – 50 km. Najniższy punkt położony jest na wysokości ok. 285 m n.p.m., podczas gdy najwyższy znajduje się na wysokości 1725 m. Taka rozpiętość wysokości warunkuje występowanie 5 pięter klimatyczno-roślinnych.
Badania koncentrowały się na następujących zagadnieniach: 1) bogactwo flor mchów w poszczególnych mezoregionach i piętrach roślinnych oraz czynniki je kształtujące, 2) wzorce rozmieszczenia horyzontalnego mchów na tle głównych czynników środowiskowych, 3) wzorce rozmieszczenia wertykalnego mchów na tle głównych czynników środowiskowych, 4) spektrum siedliskowe – autekologia mchów, 5) zmiany ilościowe i jakościowe flory mchów oraz tendencje zmian wywołane wpływem człowieka, 6) reakcje mchów na wybrane czynniki antropogeniczne modyfikujące środowisko, 7) mchy jako wyznaczniki jednostek geobotanicznych, 8) wykorzystanie mchów do oceny stanu środowiska przyrodniczego.
